  • Automated gravity casting production lines are rapidly coming online, as precision aluminum alloy castings seize opportunities in the lightweighting of new energy vehicles
    Sep 04, 2026
The intelligent transformation of China's aluminum alloy gravity casting industry has accelerated recently, with a number of new automated tilting gravity casting units completing commissioning and going into production. Relying on servo tilting pouring systems, automated industrial robot transfer, intelligent mold temperature control, and a full-process MES traceability system, traditional manual pouring is being replaced by standardized closed-loop production lines. This helps castings meet the high-threshold requirements for new energy vehicles, construction machinery, and hydraulic valve bodies in terms of density, airtightness, and mechanical properties.   With the accelerated pace of vehicle lightweighting, high-pressure die casting has shortcomings in some thick-walled, high-load-bearing structural components requiring T6 heat treatment, such as porosity and heat treatment deformation. **Steel mold gravity casting is ushering in new market opportunities.** Orders for mid-to-high-end components such as motor housings, chassis brackets, energy storage and heat dissipation housings, hydraulic valve bodies, motorcycle and automobile cylinder heads, and intake manifolds continue to increase. Industry data shows that in 2026, the proportion of gravity casting in new energy aluminum alloy structural components steadily increased, and downstream customers are demanding stricter control standards for casting shrinkage rate, material strength, and batch consistency.   This production line upgrade focuses on breakthroughs in three main areas:   First, **automated pouring**. The entire unit achieves integrated automated operation of molten aluminum transfer, servo-driven tilting pouring, ladle cleaning, and mold spraying, reducing human error fluctuations, lowering labor risks in high-temperature positions, and improving the yield rate by 10%-18% compared to traditional manual pouring;   Second, **digitalized process control**. Through casting simulation software, the gating system and cooling system are pre-optimized, and mold temperature, molten aluminum temperature, and pouring speed are monitored online in real time. Each product generates a unique production traceability file, meeting the requirements of the IATF16949 automotive parts quality system;   Third, **green, low-carbon, and circular manufacturing**. Equipped with efficient melting and heat preservation equipment and a dust purification system, aluminum scrap is recycled and remelted for reuse, reducing material loss and overall energy consumption, aligning with environmental regulations and green supply chain audit requirements for export orders.   Industry analysts believe that future competition in the gravity casting industry will no longer be about simple blank processing capabilities; core competitiveness will focus on four key areas: **independent mold design, process simulation capabilities, flexible small-batch delivery, and one-stop precision machining services**. In overseas markets, the demand for construction machinery and electric vehicle components in Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America is rapidly increasing. Domestic foundry companies with automated production lines, stable quality, and complete export delivery capabilities will gain a greater advantage in foreign trade orders.   Amid the wave of industrial transformation, gravity casting companies are accelerating their shift from extensive OEM manufacturing to becoming intelligent manufacturing service providers of high-end precision aluminum alloy parts, seizing the long-term growth dividends brought about by global lightweighting and new energy equipment upgrades.

  • Understanding Gravity Casting
    Aug 21, 2026
Those in the foundry industry are very familiar with the term gravity casting, but what exactly is it? Today, Kuntai News will guide you through the field of gravity casting in an easy-to-understand way.   Before discussing gravity casting, we need to start with the classification of casting processes. As we all know, everything has its category, and technological processes are no exception. There are many processes for turning metal materials into desired products, such as casting, forging, extrusion, rolling, drawing, stamping, cutting, powder metallurgy, and so on. Among them, casting can be considered one of the most basic, commonly used, and widely applied processes. Casting can also be divided into gravity casting and pressure casting based on the pouring process of molten metal. This is what we will focus on today.   Since we're going to talk about gravity casting, we first need to know what gravity casting is. Baidu Baike defines gravity casting as: "The process of injecting molten metal into a mold under the influence of Earth's gravity." In simpler terms, from a narrow perspective, it means pouring molten metal into a mold of the desired shape, allowing it to cool and solidify, and the desired product is formed. Therefore, gravity casting is also called casting. The effect of gravity is similar to an apple falling from an apple tree. Due to gravity, the molten metal fills every corner of the mold. However, if the product's structure is complex and not simply a horizontal surface, the machine needs to be tilted to allow the liquid to flow fully. Understanding gravity casting makes pressure casting easier to explain: it's the process of injecting molten metal into a mold under the influence of other external forces (here, excluding gravity).   Next, let's discuss the characteristics of gravity casting. Because gravity casting relies on Earth's gravity, it has better mechanical properties, mature solution heat treatment, higher production efficiency than sand casting, and more perfect dimensional accuracy. At this point, you might be wondering what sand casting is. Sand casting, also known as sand mold casting, is a traditional casting process that uses sand as the primary molding material to create products. A single metal mold can be used for hundreds to tens of thousands of castings; hence, it's also called permanent mold casting. Because each sand mold can only be used once, the mold is damaged after the casting is obtained, requiring remolding, resulting in lower production efficiency. Furthermore, due to the soft and porous nature of sand, sand castings have lower dimensional accuracy and rougher surfaces. This explains why gravity casting is more efficient and dimensionally more accurate than sand casting. While gravity casting has lower production efficiency, less precise appearance and dimensions compared to die casting, and is more expensive, it allows for post-treatment heat treatment to meet certain mechanical requirements. Die casting, on the other hand, cannot undergo solution treatment because the molten metal is rapidly injected into the mold without time for gas to escape. Moreover, gravity casting molds are cheaper than die casting molds. The material of the gravity casting mold is the key to the gravity casting machine. The commonly used materials are 45# steel, P20 steel or H13 steel. The service life of each material is different, but they are all in the tens of thousands.

  • Aluminum Alloy Gravity Casting Machine Blog Article
    Aug 14, 2026
Introduction In the aluminum casting industry, high-pressure die casting dominates the market with its ultra-high production efficiency. However, for critical components such as automotive engine cylinder blocks, hydraulic valve bodies, brake calipers and water pump housings that require high mechanical strength, air tightness and heat treatability, aluminum alloy gravity casting machines remain irreplaceable core equipment for high-precision premium casting. Many industry practitioners casually refer to gravity pouring as "gravity die casting", but technically speaking, it follows an entirely different production logic from high-pressure die casting. Today we will break down aluminum alloy gravity casting machines comprehensively from working principle, machine structure, pros & cons, selection criteria and industry applications. 1. Working Principle: Gravity-Driven Filling for Defect-Free Castings The full name is tilt-type metal mold gravity casting process. The core principle is straightforward: molten aluminum flows into the mold cavity purely by its own weight, without forced high-pressure injection. The mainstream tilt-type machine operates in 4 steps: The mold is clamped tightly on the tilting worktable, and molten aluminum is poured into the pouring cup in advance; The servo system drives the whole platform to tilt slowly in a controlled curve, letting the aluminum liquid climb and fill the cavity gently layer by layer; Low-speed layered filling allows full air exhaust inside the mold, drastically reducing common defects like gas entrapment, oxidation inclusions, cold shuts and shrinkage porosity; After full solidification, the machine resets to the horizontal position, the mold opens and the finished casting is ejected to finish one production cycle. Compared with high-pressure die casting, which fills the mold within milliseconds through high-speed jet injection, gravity casting sacrifices cycle speed for superior internal compactness — this is its biggest technical advantage. 2. Core Components of a Complete Gravity Casting Machine Based on the physical structure of Jingda Machinery tilting gravity casting machines, the whole unit is divided into 6 key modules: (1) Tilting Frame & Hydraulic System Driven by hydraulic cylinders, equipped with variable displacement piston pump, solenoid directional valve block and shell & tube water-cooled oil cooler. It ensures smooth segmented tilting speed, stable 24-hour continuous operation and prevents system jitter or core breakage caused by overheated hydraulic oil. (2) PLC Intelligent Electric Control System Supports multi-angle and multi-speed tilting curve programming, stores hundreds of product process recipes for one-click parameter switching during mold change, minimizing human operation errors. (3) Mold Temperature Control System Integrates electric heating preheating and multi-channel water cooling circulation loops to precisely stabilize mold temperature field, avoiding misrun and thermal cracks, and optimizing the grain structure of aluminum castings. (4) Mold Locking & Ejection Mechanism Four-column heavy-duty clamping structure resists deformation under static pressure of molten aluminum. Hydraulic ejection releases castings gently to prevent scratching or damage on thin-wall and complex workpieces. (5) Safety Protection & Auxiliary Supporting Devices Fitted with safety light curtains and emergency stop interlock. Can be matched with holding melting furnaces, automatic ladles and core shooters (shell core machines) to produce coated sand cores for castings with complex hollow internal cavities. (6) External Cooling Circulation Unit Independent tubular water cooler continuously dissipates heat for hydraulic oil, guaranteeing long-term stable non-stop operation. 3. Advantages & Limitations of Gravity Casting Machines Core Advantages Excellent internal integrity, eligible for T6 heat treatment   Slow filling leads to extremely low porosity. Castings can undergo solution and aging strengthening treatment to greatly boost tensile strength, hardness and pressure resistance. In contrast, high-pressure die castings contain sealed trapped gas and cannot be heat treated, making them unqualified for pressure-bearing working conditions. Compatible with sand cores for intricate hollow structures   Paired with shell core machines, it fabricates complex parts with curved internal runners, double-layer chambers and irregular hollow spaces, such as water pump volutes, engine intake manifolds and multi-way hydraulic valve bodies — functions impossible for die casting. Long service life of metal molds   No violent high-speed impact from molten aluminum. Steel molds suffer less thermal fatigue and have a far longer lifespan than die casting molds, cutting long-term mold amortization costs. High process flexibility for mixed small-batch production   Simple mold replacement and parameter adjustment. Ideal for foundries with diversified product lines and medium & small order batches, without occupying production lines for single mass-produced items. Controllable CNC machining allowance & low reject rate   Fewer internal defects greatly reduce scrap caused by water/air leakage or non-destructive testing failure after precision machining, lowering post-processing costs. Inherent Limitations Longer production cycle per workpiece, lower output than die casting. Not suitable for mass production of millions of simple thin-shell parts. Slightly inferior surface finish compared to high-pressure die casting, requiring grinding and polishing for appearance-critical products. Higher upfront mold development cost for metal hard molds, not cost-effective for one-off prototype sampling. 4. Selection Guide: Gravity Casting VS High-Pressure Die Casting

  • Discuss the application of modern gravity casting machines in non-ferrous metal casting
    Jul 31, 2026
In the non-ferrous metal casting industry, improving the mechanical properties of castings, reducing internal shrinkage cavities, and achieving stable mass production are crucial indicators of a foundry's technological level. Traditional sand casting, when producing certain high-performance aluminum and copper alloy castings (such as automotive cylinder heads, pressure valve bodies, and impellers), suffers from low thermal conductivity and slow molten metal cooling, easily leading to coarse grains and even shrinkage cavities and porosity at hot spots. To address this challenge in metal physics, more and more modern foundries are introducing automated gravity casting machines based on metal molds.   As a source manufacturer specializing in the research and development and manufacturing of various intelligent casting equipment, Quanzhou Jingda Machinery Co., Ltd., drawing on decades of experience in equipment manufacturing, will today provide an in-depth understanding of the core role of gravity casting machines in improving the intrinsic quality of castings from the perspective of metal solidification and process control.   First, rapid cooling of the metal mold significantly improves the grain size and microstructure density of the casting.   Gravity casting typically uses metal molds made of alloy steel or cast iron. Compared to sand molds produced by traditional clay sand molding machines, metal molds possess superior thermal conductivity.   When molten metal enters the cavity of a gravity casting machine, the efficient heat conduction of the metal mold significantly accelerates the cooling and solidification rates. According to metallurgical principles, this faster cooling rate can substantially refine the grain structure of the casting, reducing dendrite spacing, thereby significantly improving the tensile strength, elongation, and pressure resistance of aluminum or copper alloy castings. For pressure-resistant housings or hydraulic valves with strict airtightness requirements, gravity casting combined with metal mold processes effectively ensures that the product will not leak under subsequent high-pressure operating conditions.   Secondly, the tilting casting and sequential solidification design effectively overcomes the shrinkage cavity problem in medium and large castings.   During gravity casting, the metal shrinks in volume during solidification. If there is no adequate molten metal inside the cavity to compensate for this shrinkage, shrinkage cavities will form at the points where the casting solidifies sequentially.   Modern gravity casting machines, through their structural design, effectively solve this shrinkage problem. For example, in the initial stage of casting with a tilting gravity casting machine, the mold maintains a certain angle with the horizontal plane. As the molten metal is slowly poured in, the mechanical mechanism controls the mold to smoothly and slowly return to a vertical state. This process allows the molten metal to smoothly fill the mold from bottom to top, and combined with a reasonable mold wall thickness design, achieves "sequential solidification" from far to near. In this way, the high-temperature molten metal in the gating and riser system can provide sufficient gravity feeding during the solidification of the casting, fundamentally eliminating internal shrinkage cavities and porosity defects.   Third, the full-industry-chain technological accumulation of the source manufacturer helps upgrade the automation of the foundry workshop.   In a well-planned automated foundry, gravity casting often needs to be closely integrated with the preceding melting and core-making processes and the subsequent cleaning processes.   As a source manufacturer with full-industry-chain R&D capabilities, Quanzhou Jingda Machinery can not only provide gravity casting machines with stable single-machine operation, but also has the production capacity of core shooting machines. The integrated advantages of this complete casting equipment system allow us to comprehensively optimize and match the mechanical movements of the casting machine, the core-making rhythm of the core shooter, and process parameters from the very beginning of mold design. This overall solution helps foundries avoid technical conflicts when integrating equipment from multiple manufacturers, achieving smooth operation of the entire production line at a reasonable investment cost.   Conclusion: Building a Long-Term Competitive Barrier for Enterprises with Precise Process Equipment   In the process of the casting industry's transformation and upgrading towards high quality, the stability of equipment and the scientific nature of the process directly determine the overall profit of enterprises. Choosing a modern gravity casting machine with stable operation and precise speed control is not only an equipment upgrade, but also a comprehensive improvement of the enterprise's product quality and process standards.   If you are currently facing technical bottlenecks such as aluminum alloy castings failing to meet mechanical performance requirements, high internal shrinkage rates, or difficulty in improving production efficiency, please contact Zhongzhou Intelligent Equipment. Our engineering team will provide you with a professional overall solution, from metal mold design and equipment selection to the construction of a complete smart workshop, based on your actual casting drawings and material requirements.
